Are Public Adjusters Legitimate?
Oct 08, 2023 Crossroads IRA
If you have never worked with a public adjuster, you may wonder whether they are legitimate. They are, and in Texas they are licensed and regulated professionals who represent policyholders, not insurance companies.
How Public Adjusters Are Regulated
- They must be licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance.
- They are bound by a code of ethics and fiduciary duty to the policyholder.
- Their fees are regulated and disclosed in a written contract.
- They are the only one of the three adjuster types who works for you.
Spotting the Difference
There are three kinds of adjusters: company adjusters and independent adjusters both work for the insurer, while a public adjuster works solely for you. Be cautious of unlicensed individuals or contractors who claim they can handle your claim; always verify a license.
