How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Mar 28, 2024 Crossroads IRA

Hurricane season runs from June through November, but preparation should start well before. A little planning now spares you scrambling when a storm is bearing down.

Build Your Plan and Kit

  • Establish an evacuation plan and a family communication strategy.
  • Assemble a kit with water, non-perishable food, medications, and flashlights.
  • Keep important documents in a waterproof, portable container.
  • Know your evacuation routes and where you would shelter.

Review Your Insurance Early

Read your policy before the season starts so you understand your wind, hail, and flood coverage and your deductibles. Remember that flood damage typically requires a separate policy, and many flood policies have a 30-day waiting period before they take effect.

Photograph your home inside and out now so you have a baseline record. If a storm causes damage later, that documentation strengthens your claim, and Crossroads Insurance Recovery Advocates can help you pursue the full value you are owed.
