Tools/Business income worksheet

Business income worksheet

Project business income and extra expense, then compare waiting periods, policy limits and coinsurance.

Start with the records

Build the business-income baseline

Use a twelve-month annual schedule or actual monthly seasonality. This worksheet treats each month as 30 days for allocation and says exactly when each policy limit is applied.

Annual values are divided by 12; monthly values keep seasonality.

Gross receipts before COGS.

Cost of goods sold for the same annual period.

Operating expenses and payroll

Net profit includes every entered expense. Continuing rows are then added back once. Annual expense and payroll amounts are allocated equally across the twelve months; this worksheet does not ask for a separate monthly expense or payroll schedule. A saved-expense row that points to an expense line is excluded from the additional deduction so baseline costs are not double-counted.

Rows excluded from continuing costs remain in net profit once.

Use the category from the ledger.

Use the same annual period as the revenue inputs.

Include this baseline cost during interruption.

Rows excluded from continuing costs remain in net profit once.

Use the category from the ledger.

Use the same annual period as the revenue inputs.

Include this baseline cost during interruption.

Payroll is included in net profit before tax.

Leave blank for no ordinary-payroll cap; payroll then participates on every eligible day.

When selected, ordinary payroll is added only for eligible days.

Optional accountant projection. Negative values remain negative here; the BI result is floored at zero after the formula.

Saved expenses and additional costs

Additional saved expenses are deducted after continuing costs. Do not re-enter an operating-expense line: excluded expense lines are already present in net profit.

Loss duration, restoration, and authority period

Projected shutdown duration is measured from the loss date. Policy-period restoration eligibility begins after the waiting window; the window changes payment eligibility once and is not subtracted again from the restoration clock. Restoration months use 30 days each.

Enter the documented or projected duration from the loss date.

Strict whole-month control at 30 days/month.

Sets the first consecutive 30-day window.

Conditions are not automatic. The worksheet default is 60 days; older forms may state 30 days.

72 hours is three actual days; extra expense is not reduced by this waiting window.

Optional and limited to four weeks. Enter overlap so direct-loss BI is not counted twice.

Financial policy options

Applied to each consecutive 30-day eligible BI window, including a partial final window.

Applied once after BI and extra expense are combined.

One combined maximum period of 120 total days; BI and extra expense do not stack separate periods.

This is labelled an estimate using twelve months of net plus operating expenses including payroll.

This is a reasonable-speed restoration scenario using the entered short projected shutdown. Actual timing may be longer or shorter when supported by dated records.

Actual loss sustained is a comparison using the same facts without the selected waiting, monthly BI, 120-day, or carried-limit caps. It is not a promise of coverage or payment.

Calculation ordering and assumptions

  1. Build monthly revenue, COGS, categorized operating expenses, payroll, and net profit before tax.
  2. Add continuing expenses, including payroll only on eligible ordinary-payroll days; subtract additional saved expenses once.
  3. Use actual day counts for the 72-hour BI-only waiting period, once. The waiting window is not also subtracted from the restoration clock.
  4. Apply the BI-only fraction separately to each consecutive 30-day eligible window, including a partial first or last window; do not replace this with one global minimum.
  5. Add extra expense without the monthly BI fraction or BI waiting period.
  6. Apply the optional 120-day BI + EE period to the combined period, then the carried limit as the overall as-written cap.
  • Every month is treated as 30 days for monthly-to-daily allocation and restoration-month timing.
  • Projected shutdown duration is measured from the loss date. The 72-hour waiting window equals 3 actual day(s), applies to BI only, and is not subtracted twice.
  • The projected restoration period starts after the loss-date waiting window for payment eligibility; the interruption/restoration clock itself remains the entered loss duration.
  • Ordinary payroll is counted on every eligible day because no optional ordinary-payroll limitation was selected.
  • Civil-authority days are limited to four weeks, overlapping direct-loss days are removed once, and those overlap days do not extend the restoration period.
  • Extra expense is not reduced by the monthly BI fraction or the BI waiting window.
  • The 120-day BI + EE option is not selected.
  • Extended business income is not selected; the worksheet does not add a post-restoration extension.
  • A reasonable-speed restoration scenario and an accountant's projection are inputs for this illustration, not automatic coverage conclusions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 72-hour waiting period do?

It removes the first three actual days from business-income payment in this illustration, once. It does not remove extra expense, and it does not shorten the entered shutdown clock a second time.

How are seasonal businesses handled?

Enter twelve months of receipts and COGS and choose the month the loss began. The worksheet uses that month to move through consecutive 30-day periods.

Does the monthly fraction cap extra expense?

No. The one-third, one-fourth, or one-sixth fraction applies to BI only. Extra expense is separate, subject to the selected combined period and overall carried limit.

What is the actual loss sustained comparison?

It uses the same revenue, expense, payroll, restoration, civil-authority, and extra-expense facts without the selected waiting, monthly BI, 120-day, or carried-limit caps. It is not a promise of coverage or payment.

What does the CP 15 15 estimate show?

When selected, it multiplies twelve months of net profit plus operating expenses, including payroll, by the entered percentage. It is labelled an estimate and does not replace the policy wording.
