Frequently Asked Questions
What is Actual Cash Value (ACV)?
ACV is the value of your property at the time of the loss, typically calculated as the cost to replace it minus depreciation for age and wear. If you have an ACV-only policy, this may be the maximum you recover depending on policy terms.
What is Recoverable Depreciation?
If you have a Replacement Cost policy, the insurer generally initially pays the ACV. Subject to policy conditions, once you actually replace the item and provide proof, they may reimburse the withheld depreciation amount. If you never replace the item, you generally do not receive the withheld amount.
Can the insurance company depreciate labor?
Labor treatment is governed by the applicable policy and law. This tool labels the supplied amount; it does not decide whether labor is depreciable.
How is 'useful life' determined?
Insurers use standardized depreciation guides, but these are negotiable. If you have evidence that your item was in above-average condition or higher quality than typical, you can argue for a longer useful life, which reduces depreciation.
What happens if I don't know the exact age?
You must provide a reasonable estimate. If you cannot prove the age, the adjuster may assume it is older than it is, leading to higher depreciation. Always dig for purchase records, manuals, or even old photos showing the item.

- ISO HO 00 03: replacement-cost loss settlement starts with ACV until repair or replacement, except for the applicable small-loss treatment. Labor treatment is governed by the applicable policy and law; a labor flag does not decide depreciation. Last reviewed September 16, 2026.
- ISO HO 00 03 and ISO CP 00 10: the editable notice-period illustration defaults to 180 days; the loss date, triggering event, counting method, and applicable form control govern. Last reviewed September 16, 2026.
Supporting Records Needed
- Check your policy declares Replacement Cost (RCV) or Actual Cash Value (ACV) for these specific items.
- Document the exact age of each item with receipts, credit card statements, or photos.
- Check if your state and policy allow depreciation of labor costs.
- Read any proof-of-loss or repair-notice requirement in your policy.
- Save all replacement receipts - recoverable depreciation is usually paid only after you incur the replacement cost.
